The world's highest Shiva temple, a 360-degree Himalayan summit, and a trail short enough for a first-timer. Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila is arguably the best beginner trek in India.
Chopta (~2,680 m) is the base — a meadow hamlet called the 'Mini Switzerland of India'.
Tungnath (~3,680 m) is the highest Shiva temple in the world and the third of the Panch Kedar, where Shiva's arms are believed to have appeared. It is roughly 3.5 km up from Chopta.
Chandrashila (~4,000 m) is the summit another 1.5 km above — where Rama is said to have meditated after defeating Ravana.
Few treks anywhere give this much reward for this little difficulty.
Best: April-June (rhododendron bloom, clear) and September-November (crispest views). December-March: snow trek — beautiful, harder, needs gear. Avoid peak monsoon.
Difficulty: easy to moderate. If you can walk 5-6 km on flat ground, you can do this with breaks. Altitude at Chandrashila (4,000 m) is real — ascend steadily, hydrate. Note Tungnath temple closes for winter (around November), though the trek continues.
Chopta is ~200 km from Rishikesh (~8 hours) via Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Ukhimath. Day 1: Rishikesh → Chopta. Day 2: trek Tungnath → Chandrashila → back to Chopta. Day 3: return. Budget ₹9,500-18,000 per person. We arrange guides, stays, permits and sattvic meals.
