Panch Kedar Trek

The Panch Kedar is one of the Himalaya's most profound trekking pilgrimages — five sacred Shiva temples across Garhwal, each marking where a part of Shiva is said to have appeared. Here's the complete guide.

The five sacred Kedars

According to legend, Shiva took refuge as a bull and dived into the ground, reappearing in five parts across Garhwal:

  • Kedarnath (the hump) — 3,583 m, the most famous
  • Tungnath (the arms) — 3,680 m, highest Shiva temple in the world
  • Rudranath (the face) — 3,600 m, remote and beautiful
  • Madhyamaheshwar (the navel) — 3,490 m
  • Kalpeshwar (the hair) — 2,200 m, the only one open year-round

Difficulty & who it's for

Panch Kedar is a serious trekking pilgrimage — remote trails, significant altitude, and long days, especially to Rudranath and Madhyamaheshwar. It suits fit, experienced trekkers with a devotional spirit. It's not a casual trek; proper preparation, acclimatisation, and guided support are essential.

Route & duration

Completing all five traditionally takes 12-16 days, often spread across trips as the trails don't connect directly. Many pilgrims do them in stages over years. We can design the full circuit or individual Kedars, with experienced trek leaders, safe camps, and sattvic meals.

Best season & planning

Best windows: May-June and September-October (Kalpeshwar is accessible year-round). Monsoon brings leeches and landslide risk. We arrange guided treks with trained leaders, permits, camps, porters, and sattvic food — so you focus on the pilgrimage while we handle the mountains.

It's a serious, demanding pilgrimage with remote trails, high altitude, and long days — particularly to Rudranath and Madhyamaheshwar. It suits fit, experienced trekkers. Proper preparation, acclimatisation, and guided support are essential.
Completing all five traditionally takes 12-16 days, and because the trails don't connect directly, many pilgrims do them in stages across multiple trips. Individual Kedars can be done as shorter treks.
May-June and September-October offer the best conditions. Kalpeshwar is accessible year-round, but the higher temples are best avoided in peak monsoon (July-August) due to leeches and landslide risk, and in deep winter due to snow.
Tungnath, at 3,680 m, is the highest of the Panch Kedar and is considered the highest Shiva temple in the world. It's also one of the more accessible, often combined with the Chandrashila summit trek.
