Winter empties Uttarakhand of crowds and fills it with snow. The Char Dham closes, but what opens up — Auli's slopes, Chopta under snow, Dhanaulti's silence — is arguably better.
Closed: Char Dham (shuts around Diwali, reopens late April/May), Valley of Flowers, Hemkund Sahib, high passes, Roopkund and most high-altitude treks.
Open and at their best: Auli, Dhanaulti, Mussoorie, Nainital, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Chopta, Jim Corbett (Nov-Feb is pleasant), Binsar, Kausani.
Winter Char Dham note: the deities move to their winter seats — Badrinath to Joshimath (Narsingh temple), Kedarnath to Ukhimath, Gangotri to Mukhba, Yamunotri to Kharsali. You can still have darshan, just not at the high shrines. Few people know this.
Winter is peak season for certain treks:
All need proper gear: layers, waterproof boots, gaiters, gloves. Never attempt a snow trek unguided.
Expect: daytime 5-15°C in hill stations, nights below freezing, sub-zero at Auli and on treks. Some hill roads close briefly after heavy snowfall.
Pack: thermals, down jacket, waterproof outer, gloves, woollen cap, waterproof boots, sunscreen (snow glare is real).
Budget ₹14,000-30,000 per person for 3-4 days. Crowds are low and rates lower — except during Christmas-New Year, when Mussoorie and Auli spike. We arrange heated stays, safe drivers, and guided winter treks.
