Vaishno Devi 2026: Tips That Actually Help

Vaishno Devi sees millions of pilgrims each year — which means doing it well is a matter of timing as much as devotion.

Here are the practical tips we actually share with our pilgrims, before they leave for Katra. See our full Vaishno Devi package →

1. Avoid Navratri and weekends if possible

Navratri (twice a year), summer school holidays and long weekends are extremely crowded. Mid-week visits in October–November or February–March see the shortest queues.

2. Four ways to ascend — choose honestly

  • Trek (13 km): Fit pilgrims, 5–7 hours one way. Most rewarding
  • Pony/horse: Easier; 3–4 hours. Available from Katra
  • Palki (palanquin): Carried by porters. Senior-friendly
  • Helicopter to Sanjichhat: Skips most of the climb. From Sanjichhat, battery car or short walk to Bhawan. Best for seniors and time-pressed

Helicopter tickets sell out months ahead in peak season — book early.

3. Battery car from Sanjichhat to Bhawan

If you take the helicopter or want to skip the final stretch, battery cars run from Sanjichhat to near the Bhawan. Affordable, easy on the knees.

4. What to wear

  • Comfortable trekking shoes — not new ones (test them at home)
  • Layered clothes — Katra is warm, Bhawan is cool, even in summer
  • A small backpack with water, glucose, dry snacks
  • A light raincoat in monsoon

5. Don't carry

Mobile phones, cameras and leather items are not permitted in the cave shrine. Cloakrooms are available at the Bhawan; your operator (or we) will help.

6. Senior tips

  • Helicopter + battery car is the gentlest combination
  • Ground-floor rooms in Katra — pre-book
  • Sahayata adds a trained companion, medical kit and family updates
  • Doctor's clearance above 70

7. Bhairavnath temple — don't skip it

Traditional belief holds the yatra is incomplete without Bhairavnath, a steep 2.5 km climb above the Bhawan. Plan for it; battery car or pony can help.

8. Don't rush back

If you can, spend two nights in Katra — one before, one after the darshan. The post-darshan night, in calm reflection, is part of the pilgrimage.
