The lake and the legend

Nainital is built around Naini Lake, a natural eye-shaped lake at about 2,084 m. The name comes from Naina (eye) — legend holds that Sati's eye fell here, making Naina Devi temple on the lake's northern shore one of the 52 Shakti Peeths.

So this is not merely a British hill station; it is a genuinely sacred site with a resort town built around it.

Things to do

• Naini Lake boating — the signature experience, best at dawn when it is still
• Naina Devi temple — Shakti Peeth on the lake shore
• Snow View Point — ropeway up for Nanda Devi and Trishul views
• Tiffin Top / Dorothy's Seat — a short trek or pony ride, lovely panorama
• Mall Road — lakeside promenade, busy and pleasant in the evening
• Day trips: Bhimtal, Sattal, Naukuchiatal — quieter lakes nearby

How to reach & best time

Nearest railhead: Kathgodam (35 km, ~1.5 hours). From Delhi: ~300 km, 7-8 hours by road, or overnight train to Kathgodam then taxi. Nearest airport: Pantnagar (~70 km).

Best time: March-June (pleasant, peak crowds), September-November (clear, calmer — best for views), December-February (cold, sometimes snow). Monsoon brings landslides on the Kathgodam road.

Budget ₹12,000-25,000 per person for 2-3 days. Day 1: arrive, Naina Devi darshan, evening Mall Road and lakeside. Day 2: dawn boating, Snow View ropeway, Tiffin Top. Day 3: day trip to Sattal or Bhimtal, depart. Nainital pairs naturally with a Jim Corbett safari, about 65 km away.
