Haridwar & Rishikesh Tour

Two of India's holiest riverside towns, 25 km apart, make one perfect short pilgrimage-and-wellness trip. Haridwar for its grand Ganga aarti and ancient temples, Rishikesh for yoga, calm, and riverside cafes. Here's how to do both in 3-4 days.

Two towns, two moods, one trip

Haridwar and Rishikesh sit just 25 km apart on the Ganga, but they feel different:

  • Haridwar — ancient, devotional, intense. The grand Har Ki Pauri Ganga aarti, crowded ghats, temples, the gateway to the Char Dham.
  • Rishikesh — calmer, yogic, younger. Ashrams, riverside cafes, Lakshman Jhula, rafting, and a gentler evening aarti.

Together they give you both the fervour of traditional pilgrimage and the peace of a wellness retreat — a beautifully balanced short trip.

The 3-4 day itinerary

Day 1 (Haridwar): Arrive. Rest. Evening — the magnificent Har Ki Pauri Ganga aarti (arrive early for a good spot). Explore the ghats.

Day 2 (Haridwar): Morning temples — Mansa Devi (ropeway), Chandi Devi, Maya Devi. Afternoon transfer to Rishikesh (45 min).

Day 3 (Rishikesh): Sunrise yoga. Walk across Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula. Beatles Ashram. Riverside cafe lunch. Evening aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan.

Day 4 (Rishikesh, optional): Optional rafting or a short waterfall hike. Meditation session. Depart by afternoon.

Three days covers the essentials comfortably; four adds rafting/hiking and a slower pace.

The two aartis — don't miss either

The Ganga aarti is the emotional heart of this trip, and the two towns do it differently:

  • Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar: Grand, loud, ancient, thronged with thousands. Lamps float on the river as bells and chants swell. Overwhelming in the best way.
  • Parmarth Niketan / Triveni Ghat, Rishikesh: More intimate and musical, led by ashram residents, with group singing. Serene rather than overwhelming.

Experiencing both, back to back, is the signature of this trip — the same river, two entirely different devotional moods.

How to reach and get around

  • To Haridwar: Well-connected by train from across India; Dehradun airport (35 km) for flights.
  • Haridwar ↔ Rishikesh: 25 km, 45-60 min by taxi/bus.
  • Getting around: Autos, e-rickshaws, and taxis within each town. Rishikesh's Tapovan and Laxman Jhula areas are walkable.

We arrange all inter-town transfers and local transport so you're not haggling after a long journey.

Where to stay and costs

Split your nights between the two towns, or base in Rishikesh and day-trip to Haridwar. Realistic per-person costs for 3-4 days:

  • Budget: ₹9,000-14,000 (ashram/guesthouse stays, all local transport, meals)
  • Comfort: ₹16,000-25,000 (good hotels, private transfers)
  • Premium: ₹30,000+ (riverside resorts, curated experiences)

This is one of the most affordable meaningful trips in North India — deeply restorative without being expensive.

Common Questions

Frequently asked

3 days covers the essentials comfortably — one day for Haridwar (temples and Har Ki Pauri aarti) and two for Rishikesh (yoga, Lakshman Jhula, cafes, and the evening aarti). Four days adds rafting, a waterfall hike, or a slower, more restful pace.
Rishikesh is about 25 km from Haridwar, roughly a 45-60 minute drive by taxi or bus. Their proximity makes it easy to combine both into one short trip, either splitting nights between them or basing in one and day-tripping to the other.
They're different experiences and both are worth seeing. Haridwar's Har Ki Pauri aarti is grand, ancient, and thronged with thousands — overwhelming and powerful. Rishikesh's Parmarth Niketan / Triveni Ghat aarti is more intimate and musical. Experiencing both back to back is the highlight of this trip.
Very much. Both towns are accessible, with ropeways at Haridwar's hilltop temples (Mansa Devi, Chandi Devi) and easy riverside walks in Rishikesh. Choose comfortable hotels over austere ashrams if travelling with elderly members or young children.
September to April offers the most pleasant weather. October-November and February-March are ideal. Summer (May-June) is warm but manageable near the river and in the mornings/evenings. During major festivals and Kanwar Yatra (July), Haridwar becomes extremely crowded.
