Goa Travel Guide

India's smallest state packs beaches, Portuguese heritage, spice hills and a famously easy pace into one sun-warmed coast. Here's how to make sense of Goa and plan a trip that fits you.

North vs South — the first decision

This choice shapes everything:

North Goa — lively, developed, nightlife, markets, water sports, more crowds. Beaches: Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator, Morjim, Ashvem.

South Goa — calm, clean, spacious, wellness-leaning, relaxed. Beaches: Palolem, Agonda, Patnem, Colva, Benaulim.

For rest and wellness, go South. For buzz and variety, North. Many split their stay.

Beyond the beaches

  • Old Goa — UNESCO churches: Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral. Deep Portuguese heritage.
  • Fontainhas (Panaji) — the colourful Latin Quarter, walkable and charming
  • Spice plantations — inland, a green half-day
  • Dudhsagar Falls — dramatic four-tier waterfall
  • Saturday Night & Wednesday flea markets — Arpora, Anjuna

Best time, reaching & getting around

Best time: November-February (perfect), October & March (good). Monsoon (June-September) is lush, cheap and quiet but many shacks close. Airports: Dabolim (south) and Mopa/Manohar (north). Trains: Madgaon (Margao), Thivim. Getting around: rented scooters/cars, taxis, and the Goa taxi apps.

How to plan & costs

A comfortable Goa trip runs ₹13,000-30,000 per person for 4-5 days including stay and transfers, more for premium resorts.
